Jerry
Yeagley '61
National Champion Soccer Player and Coach
Hometown: Myerstown, PA
High School: Myerstown (currently known as ELCO)
Jerry Yeagley’s stellar career began at West Chester
in 1961 when he helped lead the Golden Rams to the 1961 NCAA National
Championship.
Yeagley eventually wound up at Indiana where his legendary coaching
career unfolded. He built the men’s soccer program from
the ground floor up. He has led the Hoosiers to five NCAA titles
and 13 College Cup appearances, including 10 championship game
appearances over 23 seasons.
In fact, every player who has played at Indiana for four years
has competed in at least one College Cup, a claim that no other
program can make.
Yeagley has led Indiana to 24 NCAA tournament berths, including
13 consecutive from 1987-99, a feat no other school has accomplished.
He has also led Indiana to eight Big Ten Championships in nine
years. His 27-year varsity record stands at 478-83-37 (.830)
through 1999, making him one of only six Division I coaches to
win more than 300 career games.
Yeagley’s records and success have been recognized by
his peers as he has won National Coach of the Year honors an
unprecedented five times (1976, ’80, ’94, ’98, ’99).
He has also been named Big Ten Coach of the Year four times.
In 1989, Yeagley earned the highest honor a college coach can
receive as he was inducted into the United States Soccer Federation
Hall of Fame.
