Gloria Krug ‘53
WCU’s Renaissance Athlete
Hometown: New Oxford, PA
High School: New Oxford

When Gloria Krug competed as an athlete at West
Chester State Teacher’s College in the early 1950’s, the opportunities
for women did not exist at the same level they do
today. But Krug found her own path in life both in the arena
of competition and in the world. She is truly a Renaissance
Woman.

Krug was a three-sport varsity athlete at West Chester,
competing for the Golden Ram field hockey (All-College First
Team), basketball and softball teams. When she wasn’t competing
at the varsity level, she was playing for intramural programs
like women’s volleyball. The yearbooks from that era
often feature Krug somewhere in the photographs.
For nearly 20 years she was a shortstop and catcher for
the Utz Chippers of the York County Softball League, while
post-graduate basketball featured a stint from 1954-60 with
the Aero Jets - a team that traveled throughout the East Coast.
Krug played field hockey with the Keystone Club (1956-
71), volleyball in the Salvation Army League (190-75) and
was the York County Ladies Doubles Champion from 1970-
75.

She spent a large part of her adult life as a Marine, earning
non-athletic awards while also competing in the military
athletic programs in the sports of volleyball and softball. She
retired from the Marine Corp at the mandatory age of 60 in
1991.

Slow down? Nonsense. Krug helped her softball team
win the Gold Medal at the Senior Olympics in 2001. She took
up the javelin and won the bronze medal in 1999, and she also
grabbed the gold medal in the shot put in 1997.

Her career included refereeing and teaching, and in 1998
she was inducted into the South Central Chapter of the Pennsylvania
Sports Hall of Fame.

Krug still competes and currently holds two Florida State
records in the javelin and the shot put (Ages 70-74) and is
ranked nationally in several field events.
