Cindy
Timchal ‘76
National Champion Lacrosse Coach
Hometown: Havertown, PA
High School: Haverford
If excellence is a measure of accomplishment, Cindy Timchal’s
eight titles at the University of Maryland speak volumes. If excellence is
a measure of character, the lives she touches and the student-athletes she
molds represent an immeasurable impact on the people around her.
When Timchal arrived in College Park, the Maryland women’s lacrosse
program stood at 201-69-3 (a .736 winning percentage) all-time. Under Timchal’s
guidance, the Terps have taken an already strong program and elevated it to
one that has notched an astounding record of 203-22 (.902), turning Maryland
into the winningest Division I women’s lacrosse team ever.
Timchal has taken her Terrapin teams to the NCAA finals in 11 of
the past 13 years, including a streak that featured seven straight NCAA Division
I National Championships - the third-longest championship streak in NCAA history.
Timchal’s coaching career began at Northwestern in 1982. During her
nine-year tenure with the Wildcats, she compiled a 76-40 record (.655) and
took her team to five NCAA I appearances. A total of 42 Terrapins have earned
All-American recognition under Timchal while a legacy of her former players
now patrol the sidelines of their own
collegiate programs.
A 1976 graduate of West Chester, Timchal lettered in lacrosse, tennis
and track & field. She served as a co-captain of the lacrosse team during
her senior year.
