Nancy Stevens ‘76
Field Hockey Coaching & Playing Success
Hometown: Manheim
High School: Lansdowne Manheim Central

In the fall of 1975, Nancy Stevens embarked on a career in field hockey that began as a captain of West Chester State’s AIAW National Championship team and continues with her stellar success as the head coach at the University of Connecticut.
A 1976 summa cum laude graduate of West Chester with a bachelor’s degree in education, Stevens has fulfilled the life of a “student-athlete.”

During the summer of her junior year at West Chester, she was a starting midfielder for the U.S. National Team in the 1975 World Championships and continued playing on the team until 1979. In the fall of 2003, she completed her 14th season at UConn and her 25th year as a head field hockey coach by continuing her reign of success.

Recognized as one of the top collegiate field hockey coaches in the nation, Stevens has compiled an impressive 384-137-24 (.727) over 25 seasons. She currently ranks second all-time in career wins among Division I field hockey coaches and has taken two Division I programs to number one in the nation.

During her coaching career, Stevens has developed 18 First Team All-Americans and six U.S. National Team players. Under her guidance, the UConn Huskies have advanced to the NCAA elite eight six times, reached the NCAA final four twice and captured 14 Big East championship titles. She has earned five Big East Coach of the Year awards during her tenure.

Before taking over at Connecticut, Stevens served as the head coach at Northwestern University for nine seasons. She led the Wildcats to eight consecutive NCAA elite eight appearances (1982-1989), three NCAA final fours, and four Big Ten Championships. Her Northwestern student-athletes maintained a perfect 100% graduation rate.
Stevens served on the U.S. Field Hockey National Coaching Staff (1982-1990) and coached the U.S. Under-19 National Team in 1997 that was selected “Team of the Year” by U.S. Field Hockey. She was also the head coach of the U.S. Junior National Team from 1982-1984.

A native of Manheim, PA, Stevens served as the head coach of field hockey and lacrosse at Franklin & Marshall College for two years, taking her 1978 squad to the AIAW national championship game.
