Brenda (Ferris) Becker ’81
Field Hockey All-American
Hometown: New Castle, DE
High School: William Penn

Field hockey historians will remember Brenda (Ferris) Becker as the best collegiate player in the United States during the 1979 campaign.

A four-year varsity player for the Division I Golden Rams, it goes without saying Becker was instrumental in helping West Chester win three of its four AIAW National Championships from 1976-78. As a senior midfielder in 1979, Becker was named an All-American and received the Broderick Award as the “Best College Field Hockey Player in the United States.”

Very few student-athletes ever earn a chance to play in a national championship game, but during the 1978-79 academic year Becker pulled off the improbable by earning two national crowns. After winning the AIAW National Championship in field hockey in the fall of 1978, Becker led West Chester to the first collegiate National

Championship ever competed in the sport of women’s lacrosse in 1979.
Becker’s career took on national stature when she was selected the youngest member of the United States Field Hockey team that qualified for the Olympics and finished fourth in the World Cup. She also captained the first U.S. Under-21 squad that beat Canada in international play and was a three-time participant in field hockey at the National Sports Festival. Her team won a Gold Medal.

The New Castle, DE, native has been a prominent figure on the Delaware sports scene. Becker earned two Diamond State Games Field Hockey Championships - one as a player, the other as a coach - and helped lead her softball team to a state crown at the First State Games in 2001. In 1999, she was named a Second Team Softball All-American as her club finished second in the country.
