Dave Dougherty ‘71
Golf & YMCA Administrator
Hometown: West Chester, PA
High School: West Chester (now Henderson)

In 1967, David Dougherty arrived at West Chester State College to attend class and play golf after being recruited by Dr. Edwin Cottrell. Little did he realize his athletic venture at West Chester would lead to a career serving the YMCA.

A graduate of West Chester (now Henderson) High School where he played both golf and soccer, Dougherty was the 1966 Men’s Golf Champion at the West Chester Golf and Country Club. He was a four-year member of the Golden Ram golf team - one season on the freshman squad and three years as a varsity player - and served as his team’s captain as a senior in the spring of 1971.

Dougherty was named the Outstanding Golfer at West Chester in 1970 after an undefeated season in dual-meet competition. The Golden Rams finished the 1969 campaign with a 14-1-1 record and captured the PSAC Championship.

Dougherty boasted a 36-5 record over his three varsity seasons. As a rookie in 1967-68, he was a dual-sport athlete who played fullback on the men’s soccer team.
After graduation, Dougherty taught physical education and was an assistant basketball coach at his high school alma mater for two years before leaving the teaching profession and embarking on his 29-year career in the YMCA.

Dougherty’s association with the organization began with the YMCA of Dover and Kent County in Dover, DE, as the association’s program director. He became the chief executive officer of the Sunbury, PA, YMCA in 1977, where he was also twice elected chairman of the Central Pennsylvania Association of YMCA’s.

In May of 1986, Dougherty took over as the chief executive officer of the YMCA of Nashua, NH, until his retirement in February of 2003. He was twice elected to serve on the board of directors of the East Field of the YMCA of the USA and was twice elected vice-chair of the Granite State Association of YMCA’s - an organization comprised of the 11 independent YMCA’s in New Hampshire.

Dougherty also served as a member of the Selective Service System Board of Hillsborough County, NH. He retired to Florida in 2003.
